Venue: Spanky’s is located on the first floor (or rather the second floor, since in Thailand the “ground floor” is considered the first floor) on the left side of Nana Plaza. It is easy to spot because when you go up the left stairs, it is practically the first Go-Go Bar you encounter.
Inside, the space is relatively small but surrounded by mirrors on the walls, which visually make it appear larger. In the center, there is a stage that is essentially a narrow catwalk with lap dance poles, two rows of couches on both sides arranged on two levels, and some stools. At the back of the room is the bar and a transparent “shower box” where, in turns, some girls perform.
The lively and boisterous atmosphere is a distinctive feature of this Go-Go Bar, along with the constant “spank” sounds made by the rubber batons with which the girls have fun spanking customers and colleagues.
Girls: About twenty or slightly more rotate between the stage and the lounge area. Generally, there are at least a couple outside inviting passersby to come in with loud swats from their rubber batons (noisy but completely harmless, of course).
Quality varies, and as in most Go-Go bars, there’s a bit of everything, but generally the attitude is good and the girls are average-looking, with the usual exceptions and subjective personal taste.
Prices: Soft drinks 160 Baht. Beers, Jack Daniel’s, Tequila, and Rum starting from 170 Baht. Lady drinks 170 Baht. – Barfine 700 Baht. Short time 2500/3000 Baht. Long time 4000/5000 Baht.
Opening hours: Daily from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Restaurant/Bar: On the menu, besides the classic Thai beers Leo, Singha, and Chang, you’ll find the must-have Tiger, Lao, and San Miguel Light, as well as Heineken, Asahi, and Corona. The rest of the selection is minimal but there’s a bit of everything, including espresso.
Note: Opened in February 2007, Spanky’s is still one of the most iconic Go Go Bars in Nana Plaza. Small but noticeable, in fact it’s practically impossible not to see the bright SPANKYS sign as soon as you go up the stairs on the left. And if you happen to be distracted, the girls at the entrance will make sure to remind you where you are by “spanking” you with their foam rubber batons. “To spank” literally means “to spank,” but the word Spanky in the sexual sphere refers to “a person who takes pleasure in giving or receiving slaps, on the butt but also on the genitals or elsewhere”). Spanky’s undoubtedly offers a fun and alternative experience to the “giants” of Nana Plaza such as Butterflies and Billboard or larger bars such as Rainbow 4 or Twister. In fact, despite the relatively small space and fewer girls compared to the aforementioned bars, the advantage here is having more direct and close contact with the girls, who constantly interact with the customers in the room. Additionally, there are frequent enjoyable little shows to watch, and the Lady Drinks are among the cheapest around. The quality of the girls varies, ranging from genuine “gems” to the more mature ladies with a few imperfections, but there’s always at least a small number of attractive girls present.
In short: If you find yourself in Bangkok and love nightlife, the famous Nana Plaza on Soi 4 is practically a must-visit, and passing by Nana Plaza without entering Spanky’s at least once is a bit like going to Tokyo without eating sushi or visiting Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower—you can skip it, sure, but if you do, it’s better not to.
